Gardener’s Schedule – October

There are various things you should or could be doing in your garden at different times of the year…

Here is a list for October:

-Dig up Dahlias, Canna Lilies, Elephant Ears or any other tender bulbs that are capable of being stored through the winter.

-Plant hardy spring bulbs such as Tulips, Daffodils, Allium, Crocus, etc.

-Keep your lawn clear of decaying leaves to help prevent lawn problems. The dead leaves can be used as mulch or can be put in a compost pile.

-Harvest any root crops or late fall veggies like potatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkins and squash.

-Plant garlic now for summer harvesting.

-Plant lettuces and spinach if you have a cold-frame.

-Transplant trees, shrubs and roses.

-Cut perennials 3 to 4 inches above the ground once the flowers have died and turned brown.
